Clear the route first, then deal with bedding and item condition. You do not need to drag a mattress outside unless the hauler specifically asks you to.

Start with the path, not the mattress

Remove laundry baskets, lamps, rugs, and loose objects from the route between the bedroom and exit. Measure tight turns if the mattress is a king, a rigid foam model, or located below grade. If a building has an elevator or loading area, confirm how it can be used before pickup day.

Strip and identify the pieces

Remove sheets, protectors, pillows, and detachable toppers. Count the mattress and box spring as separate pieces. Tell the hauler whether the mattress is foam, innerspring, adjustable-base compatible, or unusually heavy.

Do not hide condition problems

Moisture, bed bugs, bodily fluids, and exposed hardware affect safe handling and facility acceptance. Describe the condition when you request an estimate. A surprise at the doorway can stop the pickup.

A five-minute access check

Walk the route once. Open doors, secure pets, reserve the elevator if needed, and identify the closest legal loading spot. Leave the mattress indoors and dry unless the provider confirms another plan.
